Your Wash Day Maintenance Plan

Wash day doesn’t have to be an all-day event. In fact, wash day shouldn’t be an all-day event. You should be able to get it done timeously and get on with your day, provided you are intentional about it.

For many people, wash day is treated as a reset after weeks of buildup or neglect. But this is honestly not ideal. Wash days should function more like regular maintenance — the routine that keeps your hair balanced, clean, and prepared for the week ahead. Yes, you read that right, so going 2-weeks without a wash day is a nay-nay.

A good wash day routine doesn’t just clean your hair, but it should also restore moisture, strengthen your hair strands, and support your scalp. When done regularly and consistently, it could really be the key that unlocks the gates of healthy hair for you. So in this article, we’ll share a step-by-step guide to washing so you can 1) get through it faster and 2) do it right.

Here we go:

Step 1: Start with a Gentle Detangle

Before water touches your hair, take a few minutes to gently detangle. Working in sections helps prevent unnecessary breakage. Start at the ends and slowly move upward, using your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to remove knots. This step makes washing easier and reduces tangling during the process.

Patience here saves a lot of frustration later.

Step 2: Cleanse the Scalp Properly

Healthy hair begins with a clean scalp. Product build-up, sweat, and environmental debris can accumulate over time, interfering with moisture absorption and overall scalp comfort. Focus shampoo on the scalp first, not the length of your hair. As you rinse, the cleanser will move through the strands naturally.

Using MPL Charcoal Shampoo helps lift build-up while maintaining balance, leaving the scalp refreshed without stripping the hair.

Step 3: Condition to Restore Elasticity

Conditioning is when your hair regains flexibility. After cleansing, apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, where hair tends to be driest. A good conditioner smooths the cuticle and improves elasticity, helping strands bend instead of snapping.

This step is essential for textured hair, which naturally needs more support to maintain moisture and strength.

Step 4: Moisturise Before Styling

Once hair is clean and conditioned, moisture becomes the priority. Hydrated hair is more resilient and easier to manage throughout the week. Apply your moisturising product while hair is still slightly damp, allowing water and product to work together.

Following this with a light oil — such as MPL Olive Hair Oil or MPL Hair Treatment 5 Oils — helps seal that moisture in.

Step 5: Choose a Style That Supports the Week

Wash day should set your hair up for the days ahead. Low-manipulation styles like twists, braids, or simple updos can help maintain moisture and reduce daily handling. The goal is not to restyle your hair every morning, but to create a base that lasts.

The most effective wash day routine is not complicated. Instead, it is simple, repeatable and gives your hair everything it needs each time. Clean scalp, restored moisture, and gentle styling for the week. When those three things happen regularly, your hair gets to grow and you will finally see the fruits of your labour because it will be far less prone to breakage.

Wash day isn’t just about cleaning your hair, it’s about setting it up for growth, retention and overall health, so no more skimping on them, right?
