Moisture That Lasts: Your Go-To Layering Method For Type 4 Hair

If your hair feels soft and bouncy on wash day, then somehow turns dry again by Tuesday, girl same. Type 4 hair needs more hydration than other hair types so you’re not doing anything wrong; your hair just needs more moisture.

With cooler weather slowly (and other times harshly) settling in, there’s no time left to wander around with a head of hair that isn’t properly moisturised. Let alone not know how to seal in moisture. If you are indeed walking around buying more products than you can use, all in an attempt to “lock in moisture”, this article is here to save your coins while dropping gems.

There is a science to moisture lock, and we’re going to teach it to you so you don’t have to fall victim to false marketing claims or overconsumption. If you do not follow this formula, you will struggle to retain moisture in your hair but if you choose to learn and follow through, well then you can send us a shout-out on our Instagram @mpl_hair to tell us all about your soft, healthier hair.

Here’s the layering method we want you to follow, because it works, and it doesn’t require a 12-step routine.

Hydrate → Support → Seal

Yes, that’s it! You’re building moisture in sensible layers, the way you’d layer clothing when it’s cold: base layer first, then warmth, then protection. Let’s unpack each layer. First, we hydrate.

Hydration starts with damp hair, not dripping wet, not dry. Damp. If you’re fresh out of the shower, squeeze out excess water with a T-shirt or microfibre towel. If you’re midweek, a light mist is enough. You aim to give the hair a bit of water to hold onto.

A great MPL-friendly first step here is MPL Fermented Rice Water. It’s light, easy to spread, and perfect as that “base” layer before you start adding heavier things. Then, we support.

This is the ‘stay soft’ layer. This step separates “soft for one day” and “soft for the week”. The support layer helps with slip, softness, and breakage. Use leave-in conditioners or a water-based cream moisturiser to nourish your hair. This also works if you keep your hair in friction-causing protective styles. And last but certainly not least, seal it all in!

Lock in all that goodness with an oil! This is where MPL shines, even if we say so ourselves. With our wide range of nutrient-rich oils, you can select the best oil for your hair. Here’s a quick guide so you don’t overthink it:

●      MPL Olive Hair Oil: everyday sealing when you want softness and a healthy shine

●      MPL Coconut Hair Oil: great when hair feels extra thirsty and you want a smoother finish

●      MPL Vitamin E Hair Oil: perfect for ends and for that neat, polished feel without heaviness

●      MPL Black Castor Oil: thicker and best used targeted (ends, edges, braids), not necessarily all over, every day

●      Sure2Gro Hair Oil: a strong option when you want a richer seal, especially under low-manipulation styles

Moisture that lasts isn’t about doing the most. It’s about doing the basics in the right order, consistently. Hydrate properly, support where your hair needs it, and seal in the goodness.

Bye-bye breakage!

Love MPL,

Your Hair Doctor
