Spring Your Coils Back to Life

The products that saved your hair in winter cannot be your spring staples.

As temperatures drop in winter, the hair cuticle tightens and closes. Your coils lose moisture quickly because there's nothing in the environment to replenish it. Heavy butters, thick creams, and rich oils create an occlusive layer on the shaft that slows that moisture loss down. They work exactly as intended.

But in spring, the air changes. Humidity returns. Your hair cuticle opens in response to the moisture in the environment, which means it's now receptive in a way it wasn't in winter. And those same occlusive products are now sitting on top of an open cuticle, preventing it from doing the one thing it's finally able to do: absorb.

The result is hair that looks moisturised but feels heavy, dull, and slow to respond. Most people assume they need to add more product. They don't. They need to remove the barrier.

This is what the switch you need actually looks like:

Winter

Spring

Product texture

Heavy butters, thick creams

Water-based leave-ins, lightweight cream

Sealant

Rich oil — creates an occlusive barrier

Light penetrating oil — seals without blocking

Layering method

LOC — liquid, oil, cream

LCO — liquid, cream, oil

Wash frequency

Every 10–14 days

Every 7 days

Your goal

Lock moisture IN against dry air

Let moisture IN from humid air

Essentially, in spring choose water-based leave-ins over thick creams, and lighter oils that penetrate rather than coat. You should use less product overall, because your hair can now access moisture from the air, provided you let it.

MPL Coconut Hair Oil is effective here precisely because it's absorbed rather than just deposited on the surface. It seals without blocking. Apply it after your water-based products, focusing on the ends where the cuticle is most damaged and moisture escapes fastest.

One more adjustment: layering order matters more in spring. The LCO method works better in humidity because it allows the hair to pull moisture from the air through the cream layer before sealing it in. Many people find their hair responds noticeably differently to the exact same products just by switching the order.

To your hair springing back to life!
