How to Speak Up to Your Stylist (Respectfully)

So you’re sitting in a salon chair, feeling a bit anxious as the tension builds… literally. Your edges are screaming, but your mouth stays quiet. Because you don’t want to offend. Because they’ve “been doing hair for years.” And you just hate to make things awkward. But here’s the thing, your silence will cost you and your scalp will be the one that pays for it.
In this article, we look at how not to lose your voice (or your edges) while in the salon chair.
1. Be clear from the beginning
Before the first braid is parted or the glue is squeezed out, set expectations. Be clear about what you want and what you don’t want. If you’re tender-headed, allergic to certain products, or simply want less tension, say so early.
You could say:
● “I know I’m sensitive around my edges, can we be extra gentle there?”
● “I’d prefer it if we didn’t braid too tight in the front just to preserve my hairline please.”
2. It’s Okay to Interrupt
If you feel discomfort mid-style, you are allowed to pause things. You don’t have to endure pain just to be polite.
You could say:
● “I’m starting to feel a bit of pulling, please can we loosen that section slightly?”
● “That’s a little too tight for me”
Respectful honesty builds trust. You’re not criticising their skill, you’re just advocating for your comfort. Stylists are professionals, but they’re not mind readers. When you speak up with kindness, you create space for mutual respect and a better experience overall.
If you consistently leave appointments with headaches, bumps, or thinning edges, it’s time to re-evaluate. A great stylist listens to your needs, honours your boundaries, and prioritises your hair health. You deserve nothing less.
Advocating for your hair health doesn’t make you difficult, it makes you empowered. Say what you need. Ask for gentleness. And remember: no style is worth sacrificing your hairline.
