DIY: Steaming at home with MPL

You know how sometimes the solutions to your problems are under your nose, but you just can’t see them for yourself? Well, in this case, it’s in your bathroom cabinet.

According to Essence, steaming can work wonders for those with relaxed or coloured hair, helping to strengthen and promote growth. Do you know you don’t need to go to a salon to give your hair a steaming treatment? And the best part is, you probably already have everything you need at home.

Before we tell you how to do it, let’s first unpack why.

Why Steam Your Hair?

Hair steaming is like a spa day for your locks, providing much-needed hydration to dry strands. It also stimulates blood flow to the scalp and opens up the hair follicles, allowing deep conditioning treatments to penetrate each strand more effectively. This makes it especially beneficial for those with low porosity hair, but trust us – all hair types can benefit from a little steamy TLC.

Here’s what you'll need:

●      1 shower cap or medium-sized plastic bag

●      1 large-sized plastic bag

●      1 absorbing towel

●      MPL Charcoal Conditioner

●      Coconut oil

Now, a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prep Your Hair: Start with freshly washed and detangled hair. This will ensure that your hair is ready to soak up all the goodness from your steaming treatment.

  2. Apply MPL Charcoal Conditioner and Coconut Oil: Generously apply MPL Charcoal Conditioner to your hair, followed by coconut oil. Coconut oil is known for its moisturising properties and will help to lock in moisture during the steaming process.

  3. Cover Your Hair: Put on a shower cap or plastic bag, making sure it covers your entire head. It's essential to ensure a tight fit to prevent any air from escaping.

  4. Heat Your Towel: Grab a towel and soak it in water. Then, place the towel in the microwave for 2-3 minutes, ensuring it's warm enough to steam your hair but not too hot to burn you. Please do not burn yourself trying to shorten the amount of time you keep the towel on.

  5. Wrap Your Hair: Wring out the excess water from the towel and wrap it around your head, covering the shower cap or plastic bag.

  6. Seal the Steam: Cover your towel-wrapped head with a large plastic bag, ensuring it's big enough to fit over your entire head.

  7. Steam Away: Leave the steam treatment on for 1-2 hours, allowing the heat to work its magic and infuse your hair with moisture. It’s best to steam on cleaning days so you can go about your business while your hair is in treatment.

  8. Rinse and Seal: After steaming, rinse your hair with cold water. This will help to seal the hair cuticles and lock in all the nutrients from your conditioner and coconut oil.

Give your hair this steaming treatment at least once a month, and prepare to be amazed by the results. Whether it's softer, shinier, or more manageable locks, your hair will thank you for the extra TLC.

So there you have it – a DIY hair steaming treatment using MPL Coconut oil that's guaranteed to leave your locks looking and feeling their best. Happy steaming!

Love MPL, your hair doctor.
