Your Texture Is The Style
Type 4 hair shrinks. It shrinks. A coil that reaches your shoulders when fully stretched can sit above your ear when dry. Shrinking is a key characteristic of type 4 hair, and we don’t know what to tell you. For a long time, shrinkage has been framed as a problem to work around with tension, heat, or stretching methods, but it's not. And the sooner you stop trying to fight it, the faster you can learn how to work with it.
‘Shrinkage’ has the worst PR, but it’s actually such a useful and important indicator of your hair health and elasticity. Hair that springs back tightly is retaining moisture and has healthy curl resilience. Hair that doesn't shrink as much as it used to, or that shrinks unevenly across the head, is often signaling a change in condition: moisture imbalance, protein overload, or accumulated damage. Many people are so focused on reducing shrinkage that they miss the fact that the curl's ability to spring back is worth monitoring as a health signal.
Styling with shrinkage instead of against it means choosing styles that work with what the hair naturally produces. Like a twist out that enhances the curl pattern rather than imposing one. A puff or bun that uses the volume shrinkage creates rather than fighting it. Low-manipulation options that let the curl do what it does. These hold better, cause less breakage over time, and require less effort than styles built around elongating or stretching the curl.
What your hair looks like after a wash and go, a twist out, or a stretched braid-out is your texture. That's the style. The work is learning to love it! Learning how to get the most out of the curl pattern you have, rather than a reference pattern from someone else's hair.
Product choices for type 4 hair generally work better when they're lighter. A heavily loaded routine on highly porous, tightly coiled hair tends to build up quickly and create a heaviness that clumps curls together rather than defining them individually. Water-based leave-in for moisture, then a light sealant to hold it in, is usually enough. MPL Olive Hair Oil as the final step works well because it absorbs into the hair rather than coating it, which lets the curl move and clump naturally without sitting stiff or heavy.
The texture you have is the style. Learning to work with it, rather than around it, is the whole thing.
