Why Your Hair Gets Dry in Winter (And What to Actually Do About It)

Winter hits different when you have natural hair. The temperatures drop, the air changes, and suddenly your coils have given up on retaining moisture entirely. You moisturise in the morning, and by noon you're back to square one.

So what's actually happening?

Cold air holds less moisture than warm air. When humidity drops outside, the air draws moisture away from your hair so your strands feel every bit of it. Add indoor heating to that (which dries out indoor air too), and your hair is fighting a two-front battle.

The good news is that winter hair doesn't have to mean dry hair. It just means adjusting, and once you do, you'll notice the difference within weeks.

1. Start by switching up your sealing game. Lighter summer oils probably aren't cutting it anymore. In winter, you need something that creates a proper seal so moisture has nowhere to escape. MPL Coconut Hair Oil is excellent for this — coconut oil is one of the few oils that actually penetrates the hair shaft rather than sitting on top, so you're getting retention from the inside out. Apply it on slightly damp hair for maximum absorption.

2. Your ends need extra attention right now. They're the oldest, most worn part of your hair, and the first to snap in cold, dry conditions. Before you put your hair in any style, make sure your ends are moisturised and sealed. Protective styles like braids and  twists are your best friend this season. Anything that keeps your ends tucked away from the elements.

3. Don't overlook your scalp. A dry scalp in winter causes itchiness, flaking, and can slow down growth. A few drops of MPL Hair Treatment 5 Oils massaged into your scalp 2–3 times a week is a simple habit with real results. It nourishes, stimulates circulation, and keeps your scalp environment healthy when everything outside is trying to strip it dry.

One more thing, humidity is your friend. If you spend a lot of time in heated, closed indoor spaces, even just keeping a glass of water near your workspace can help.

Your hair is responding to its whole environment, not just what you put on it.

Winter doesn't have to be the season you survive. With a few real tweaks, it can be the season your hair continues to thrive.
