Castor oil has been laundered for being a game changing agent in hair regimes so much so that it’s included in shampoos and even sprays but what is the big deal about castor oil and is it as good as people say? Well, we are unpacking all you need to know about castor oil and its real impact on hair.


Castor oil, which is traditionally used as a laxative, contains natural antiviral and antimicrobial properties that ensure that this oil is more than just the cure for constipation. Castor oil is what is known as a carrier oil which is used to bring nourishment when creating other products like soaps, lotions and hair moisturizers. It is predominantly used for its soothing and healing properties for the skin but more recently, forms part of hair care regimes for hair strength and growth,


Many people who have started incorporating castor oil into their hair regime have claimed an increase in hair growth, fullness and health. So how can you start using castor oil and where should you start?

How should you use it? Well, below is a lovely step-by-step guide to introducing castor oil to your hair and scalp:

  1. Section your hair into 4 parts.

  2. Apply the castor oil to your scalp using your fingers. Massage the oil into your scalp.

  3. Apply castor oil to the rest of your hair by running your hand up toward the tips of your hair. You can also use a comb to ensure even coverage.

  4. Once applied, put on a shower cap and make sure all hair is tucked in.

  5. Clean up any oil drippings with a towel.

  6. Leave the shower cap on for at least two hours to give the oil enough time to penetrate the scalp, hair follicles and hair shaft.

  7. After two hours, wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner.
