The Chronicles of Swimming with 4C Hair

Source: MyCurlProducts

Swimming with 4C hair can sometimes feel like a bad idea, but it doesn’t have to be! Whether you’re heading to the beach or pool, you can maintain your coils and curls while keeping them healthy and hydrated. So, grab your swim cap (or don’t!)—let’s dive into these tried-and-true tips for swimming with 4C hair.

1. Prepping for the Plunge

Before you jump into that pool, it’s important to prep your hair properly. Start with a good soaking of fresh water before swimming. This helps reduce how much chlorinated water your strands absorb. 4C hair is naturally thirsty, and your curls will soak up the first liquid they meet—let’s make sure it’s water, not chemicals.

2. Add a Protective Layer

To add an extra layer of defence, apply a generous amount of leave-in conditioner or oil before getting in the water. Products like the MPL Black Castor Oil or MPL Clove Hair Food work wonders to seal moisture and create a protective barrier that helps prevent chlorine or salt from drying out your hair. The oil or conditioner forms a "shield" that prevents your strands from getting too damaged during your swim.

3. Cover Up or Don’t

Swim caps are great for keeping your hair dry (ish), but let’s face it—they don’t always accommodate thick, natural hair. If a swim cap works for you, fantastic! But if not, just be sure to give your hair some extra TLC post-swim. If you choose to wear your hair out in the water, braided styles or twists help to keep your hair manageable and prevent tangles.

4. Post-Swim Care Is Key

Once you’re out of the water, it’s time to show your hair some TLC. The chlorine, salt water, and other chemicals can wreak havoc on 4C hair, so a thorough rinse is non-negotiable. Rinse your hair immediately to get rid of the chemicals, and follow up with a sulphate-free shampoo like the MPL Charcoal Shampoo to cleanse your hair deeply but gently.

5. Moisturise and Revive

After washing, it’s essential to replenish your hair with moisture. Use a hydrating deep conditioner, like the MPL Charcoal Conditioner, to restore any lost hydration and add softness back into your curls. After rinsing out the conditioner, you can apply a lightweight oil like MPL Olive Oil or the MPL Fermented Rice Water Treatment to help restore shine and boost elasticity.

6. Detangling Done Right

After a swim, your hair may be prone to tangles and knots—especially if you skipped the swim cap. Detangle with patience and care! Use a wide-tooth comb and always work from the tips to the roots, preferably while your hair is damp and saturated with a leave-in conditioner to avoid breakage.

7. Keep It Regular

If you’re a frequent swimmer, you’ll need to maintain a regular routine that’s specifically tailored to balance the impact of water on your 4C hair. Weekly deep conditioning treatments and consistent moisture sealing will ensure that your hair stays hydrated, healthy, and strong, no matter how often you hit the pool.

With the right prep and post-swim routine, you can dive into the water without compromising your curls. And since Summer is knocking on the door, it’s go time!

Love, MPL
