The 401 On Mixing Hair Products? What Works, What Doesn’t, And What You Should Never Do

Between TikTok experiments, DIY blends, and “product cocktailing,” it’s tempting to mix everything you own into one routine. But should you? Sometimes yes. Other times, absolutely not.

Combinations that work

These combinations actually work well together, so mix away.

1. Water + Oil

We know you’re thinking oil and water don’t mix but, on your hair and scalp, they make a dynamic duo. Perfect for refreshing your hair daily or weekly. Water hydrates while oil seals. Perfect combo. Use light oils like MPL Coconut Hair Oil or MPL Olive Hair Oil.

2. Leave-In + Oil

A leave-in adds moisture; oil locks it in. Ideal for braids, twists, and afros.

3. Shampoo + Conditioner (in that order)

Not mixed — but layered. The combination works because they do opposite jobs.Try MPL Charcoal Shampoo + Charcoal Conditioner for a balanced cleanse.

Combinations that sometimes work

These combinations work well in moderation.

1. Layering multiple oils

Layering oils can be super beneficial for getting multiple nutrients, if you’re not overdoing it. Two light oils? Good. Four heavy oils? Build-up. A hack is just using MPL 5 Oils, you get all the nourishment from the different oils without the build-up.

2. Mixing oils into your conditioner

Okay for extra slip, but be careful. Too much oil stops the conditioner from absorbing properly.

Combinations that don’t work

These combinations don’t go together.

1. Mixing strong protein products with heavy oils

They cancel each other out — the protein can’t penetrate through the oil.

2. Mixing gels and creams (randomly)

This often creates flakes or a white cast. Always test on your palm first:If it balls up → don’t use it.

3. Mixing oils into gels

This breaks the gel’s hold, leaving you with crunchy + greasy hair. Not cute.

Never mix the following:

-       Mixing clarifying shampoo with oils (they neutralise each other)

-       Mixing random products because someone on the internet said it works

-       Mixing too many products at once — your scalp will revolt

You can mix products, but do it right. Keep things simple, choose combos that make sense, and let your hair flourish.

Great breakdown. A lot of people end up damaging their hair simply by mixing products without understanding how the ingredients interact. Keeping routines simple and testing combinations first is definitely the safest approach. The same idea applies to apps too—I recently came across a guide on similar apps like Tachiyomi that compares alternatives instead of randomly trying dozens of different options.
