Steps to steaming your hair at home

Hair steaming isn't just a luxurious treat for your locks; it's a powerful tool in your hair care arsenal, especially if you have relaxed or coloured hair. Steaming can significantly strengthen and grow your hair, providing the hydration it needs and promoting hair growth by stimulating blood flow. The best part? You don’t need to visit a salon for this rejuvenating treatment – you can do it all at home! Here is your step-by-step guide on how to safely steam your hair at home.

Let’s start with what you’ll need:

  • x 1 shower cap or medium-sized plastic bag

  • x 1 large-sized plastic bag

  • x 1 absorbent towel

  • x 1 conditioner (recommended: MPL Charcoal Conditioner)

Now for the step-by-step guide to steaming your hair at home:  Step 1: Wash and Detangle

Begin with freshly washed and detangled hair. Even if you washed your hair two days ago, wash it again. Clean hair ensures that all the benefits of the treatment are fully absorbed. Depending on when your last wash was, you can either use a clarifying shampoo or a conditioning shampoo.

Step 2: Apply Conditioner

Generously apply conditioner to your hair. This step is vital because it’s intended to bring moisture and nutrients back into your hair.  We recommend MPL Charcoal Conditioner as it is formulated to provide deep nourishment and restore vitality to your strands.

Step 3: Cover with a Shower Cap

Put on a shower cap or a plastic bag, ensuring it covers your entire head snugly. This traps the heat and moisture, creating the perfect steaming environment.

Step 4: Prepare Your Towel

Soak a towel in water and then heat it in the microwave for 2-3 minutes. The towel should be warm enough to generate steam but not so hot that it burns you.

Step 5: Wrap Your Head

Wring out the excess water from the towel and wrap it around your head, over the shower cap.

Step 6: Secure with a Large Plastic Bag

Cover your towel-wrapped head with a large plastic bag. This extra layer helps retain the heat and steam.

Step 7: Let it Steam

Keep this setup on for 1-2 hours. For an added boost, you can sit under the sun to enhance the steaming effect.

Step 8: Rinse with Cold Water

After steaming, rinse your hair with cold water. This step is important as it seals the hair cuticles, locking in all the nutrients from the conditioner.

By incorporating this steaming treatment into your routine at least once a month, you'll see noticeable improvements in the health and vibrancy of your hair.

Happy steaming!

Love, MPL
