Protein vs Moisture

Your hair tells you what it needs; you just have to know what to listen for.

One of the most common (and confusing) conversations in the natural hair community is the protein vs moisture debate. Both are essential for healthy hair. But too much of one — or not enough of the other — throws everything off.

Your hair is made up of a protein called keratin. Keratin gives hair its structure, its elasticity, and its ability to spring back without snapping. Moisture is what keeps that structure pliable and flexible, so it can handle the daily demands of your life, like styling, manipulation, and environmental exposure. You need both. The goal is balance.

How do you know if your hair is out of balance? The wet stretch test is your best friend. Take a strand of wet hair and gently stretch it. Healthy hair stretches a little and then bounces back. If it stretches a lot and feels mushy before breaking, your hair probably needs protein. If it barely stretches and snaps quickly, it's likely dry and craving moisture.

Protein-deficient hair tends to feel weak, limp, and overly soft; it breaks easily, even though it doesn't feel dry. If this sounds familiar, introducing a protein treatment into your routine can make a big difference. MPL Fermented Rice Water is a great starting point. Rice water is naturally rich in amino acids, which help strengthen and smooth the hair shaft. Use it as a rinse once a week, or apply it to dry hair for 20–30 minutes before washing for a deeper treatment.

Moisture-deficient hair, on the other hand, feels rough, looks dull, and tends to tangle a lot. The LOC method (liquid, oil, cream) is one of the most effective ways to restore and retain moisture. After washing, apply a water-based leave-in first, then seal with MPL Olive Hair Oil, and follow with a cream or butter to lock it all in.

Here's the thing, though, your hair's needs will shift with the seasons, your hormones, your diet, and even the water in your home. There's no single formula that works forever. What matters is checking in regularly and adjusting.

If you're ever unsure whether you need protein or moisture, always default to moisture first. It's easier to correct than an overload of protein, which can make hair stiff, brittle, and prone to breakage.

Listen to your hair. It's telling you something.

Your Hair Doctor
