What Essential Oils Are Good For Dreadlocks?

October 12, 2018

As we all know, hydration is very important for healthy natural hair. Dreadlocks are no exception. Essential oils are an amazing natural way to keep your hair healthy and hydrated. They are highly concentrated oils extracted or distilled from various parts of trees and plants, such as roots, flowers, fruits, stem or bark.

And as much they have great physical health benefits, they carry great mental health benefits too, being used for medicinal and therapeutic purposes. Back to dreadlocks though, because of the texture, using oils may tend to be trickier. So the main focus has to be on the scalp of course, more than the actual locs, if you want healthy growth. One way is to make your own DIY Essential Oil Spray for your dreads, rather than use the oils straight from the bottle. Or make your own oil blend with a base oil. This is a inexpensive and effective way to keep your dreads clean, smelling good AND hydrated. Depending on the specific benefit that you want, you should measure and mix the oil with some aloe vera gel or MPLs Hair Gel and distilled or floral water to make your spray. For an oil blend, the essential oil should usually be mixed at a 1:3 ratio. Remember, essential oils are extremely concentrated so they should always be diluted.

Here are some essential oils to try for your dreads, as well as their benefits:

Tea tree oil - Known as one of the most versatile essential oils, tea tee is effective for helping with purifying the scalp and assisting with getting rid of dandruff. This is the best oil for a healthy scalp as it helps keep it free of bacterial and fungal problems. It also unblocks hair follicles therefore stimulating the scalp and promoting hair growth.

Lavender oil - This is a calming oil, so it helps to balance the skins pH and stimulates circulation, helps reduce hair loss as well as heals skin irritation (psoriasis and rashes).

Rosemary oil - This oil is packed with antioxidants that help prevent hair thinning or greying. Making it a master in hair growth enhancement. It also assists in eliminating dandruff and relieving an itchy scalp.

Peppermint oil - Besides the great smell, this oil stimulates blood flow to the hair roots, allowing your hair to receive the proper nourishment it needs to grow. You will definitely feel this in its tingling effect on the scalp.

Chamomile oil - Usually the best tea to drink before bed, but did you know that chamomile also has amazing benefits for hair and scalp health? It is known to have anti-inflammatory  and antiseptic qualities and help with eczema or scalp acne. Not only is it soothing, it will also add beautiful golden highlights to blonde hair and a beautiful sheen to dark hair. In addition, it conditions the hair and improves softness.

In essence, essential oils are essential! So try them out and watch your locs flourish.
