Poems for natural hair

January 31, 2018

It is unfortunate that natural hair is still given a hard time in media, work places and within some social settings. At MPL we celebrate hair in all its form and since we are nearing the month of love, we thought we would share some of our favourite natural hair poems to celebrate our love for your hair.

All natural by Lamont Lilly.

I like the kind of hair

that will stand up for its rights

the kind that kicks

screams and protests.

the kind that resists

and boycotts with every coil

the kind that fights

riots and rebels.

the kind that won’t

be quiet for nobody.

the kind that won’t

be anything but black.

the kind that refuses

to relax.

Hands by Neon Soul

Nana used to sit me on the step

that separated her dining and

living room to comb my

thick cottony hair.

part after part.

plait after plait.

we would settle down

into our seat as she created

magic with her hands.

they always struck

me as the strongest hands

in the world.

she cooked with them.

cleaned with them.

calmed babies and big

kids with hugs and swaddles.

her resilience shone through

parting clouds,

and they were still kind enough

to tame a mountain of hair

without force.
