There are some things we wish we had known when we were younger that would have saved us from damaging our hair and scalp. There is no hope in living in the past but at least there are some steps we can take to strengthen our hair plus we can always share what we know now with our younger sisters.
Things I wish I knew:
To challenge the hairdresser not to pull my hair too tightly especially my edges.
That there are other ways to stretch my hair without using harsh relaxers like twisting and threading.
To do treatments regularly
To do my research before dying or bleaching my hair.
Cotton pillowcases can cause hair breakage and one should wear a silk or satin scarf to bed.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise.
Avoid tying hair up all the time as frequent pulling damages the hairline.
Not to wash hair everyday
Trim split ends regularly
Hair needs a break, you can’t keep picking, pulling and stretching it all the time.
To research the hair products I use and look out for any harsh chemicals
That healthy hair is more important than lengthy hair. If it’s healthy and long then that is perfect.
What works for someone else, might not work for me.
Scratching your scalp often can damage it, if its itchy, rather treat it
Your diet also affects your hair, so eat wisely and healthy.
