FULANI-INSPIRED BRAIDS FOR THE SUMMER

November 15, 2017

The origin of Fulani braids

Cornrows have taken on a new aesthetic, and this new style is not so new if you dig deep to its origin. These are the Fulani braids, which originated from West Africa from the Fula tribe, the women of the tribe used beads and cowrie shells to decorate their hair which was plaited and this gave birth to the highly requested hairstyle among beautiful black girls in 2017.

The elements of Fulani braids

It’s not just any kind of cornrows which constitutes them to be Fulani braids, they come with specifics and details. The following are elements that are found in Fulani braids:

  • Either one or two braids are braided from back to front hanging on the temples of the head.

  • One cornrow braided in the centre of the hair from the front edge to the back.

  • Hair accessories such as beads or cowrie shells are used to decorate the hair.

  • A cornrow is plaited all around the head.
