So you have spent a lot of time with a protective hair style. It saved you from your hair getting damaged and frequent trips to the salon. We love our braids and cornrows but it seems like a chore to take them out. With all that unravelling it’s essential to take good care of your natural hair without ripping it out from the protective style hair fibre.
1. Finger detangle
Using your fingers tips, gently separate your hair from any oil build up that occurred while wearing your protective style (braids or cornrows). Be careful not to pull along the edges of your hair while detangling your hair. Make sure that your natural hair is knot-free and follow up with a wide-tooth comb and comb your hair out before washing it.
2. Add Moisture.
Spritz your hair with warm water and apply to your hair, from root to tip, an essential oil. Put on a plastic hoodie on your hair and sit with it on for 45 to 60 minutes. Again finger detangle your hair for the last time before washing it. Deep conditioning your hair this way allows for it to be moisturized and is essential to replace all the moisture that was lost during your protective style.
3. Cleanse and deep condition
Using a sulfate free clarifying shampoo wash your hair from root to tip. Cleanse your scalp too and follow up with a deep conditioner. Leave in your deep conditioner for 30minutes for your hair strands to be restored from any breakage.
4. Let your hair breathe
Before reinstalling another protective style, let your hair breathe for a minimum of 2 weeks. Wear your hair proudly natural. Feed it with water, oils and air. Do a hair mask treatment in this period of two weeks. Allowing for your hair to breathe gives time for your hairline to also regain strength and for your scalp to heal if it experienced any irritation.
5. MPL for the win
What would a hair routine of taking out your protective style be without including an MPL product? Meaningless. One of the best in the game is our Sure2Gro hair oil which replenishes broken hair and encourages hair growth. We recommend that you apply it onto your hair after washing your hair.
Taking out your protective style requires a lot of time. Make sure you leave a day available for your hair care routine.
