MAKE A STATEMENT WITH URBAN_MIMZ

October 13, 2017

We’ve refreshed our Instagram timeline quite a numerous times to come to the conclusion that Ncumisa Duma (@urban_mimz) is the best hairstylist in the city of Johannesburg. When it comes to your hair they say you either go big or you go home we say it’s either you choose Urban Mimz or stay indoors. Affectionately known as Mimi, we had a 5 minute chat with this talented hairstylist telling us about her career journey and spilling some sound hair advice.

MPL: Hello Mimi, let’s get straight into it, tell us about your journey in plaiting hair? How did it all start?

@Urban_mimz (UM): My journey of plaiting hair started in primary school. I would do my friends hair at lunch breaks. I didn't see it as a profession then but later realised that I could make a sufficient income out of it I then enrolled to study hairdressing in 2007. Before I took hairstyling as a profession I was in performing arts, mainly focusing on stage theatre and dance, traveling internationally. I found my passion for hair on stage.

MPL: Do you have another hustle apart from being a hair artist and changing women’s’ images one plait at a time?

UM: I'm a freelance hair artist, doing hair full-time it's my passion and hustle

MPL: What inspires your creative process to come up with a suitable hairstyle for a client and where do you draw from for inspiration?

UM: It’s always a joint effort between the client and I. Client consultations are vital because that is where you pick-up important points about their lifestyle and that guides you into styles that you can do or those that you can't because of character or lifestyle.

I draw inspiration from the things I see to the conversations I have with different people. I draw from culture and origin and I always try to find a way to express in my own signature with an urban feel to relate to the 21st century aesthetic.

MPL: You have worked with numerous Influencers giving them beautiful crowns to wear. What has been your career milestone?

UM: My greatest milestone is meeting ordinary people and securing them as clients which gave me a platform to educate them about our natural hair so we can create change, and comfort that “Hey, it’s okay to wear your hair in anyway you feel like it!”

My other proudest moments were working with photographer Trevor Stuurman, The Bubblegum Club magazine, E! Entertainment presenter search SA, SA Fashion week, Nike digital campaign and lastly gaining the King Thandiswa Mazwai as one of my regular clients

MPL: You are the much talked about “hair-braider” how do you find your clientele?

UM: Social media platforms help a great deal but most of the appointments I get are secured from the good ol’ traditional "word of mouth", it still works for me as my clients help me in getting more clients through their referrals.

MPL: A little birdie let us in that you do keep one of our products in your stash box, which one is it?

UM: I have the MPL coconut oil and I love it so much . I apply it to my client’s hair often.

MPL: What hair-care advice do you swear by for natural hair?

UM: Keep the right type of products for your hair type. Be consistent with your hair-care routine. Be patient with the hair growth journey. Also remember this, “natural hair is not a trend!!!”
