Seasons change, but great hair should be forever

September 6, 2017

When the seasons change, so should your hair care

You may be thinking, “It’s spring, it’s time to let my ‘fro loose and be carefree!” But before you bring out the ribbons and flower crowns, here are some ways to make sure your hair is looking its best as mother nature shifts gears.

It’s about to be beach and pool season, and although your natural locs love moisture; sand and chlorine are not hair friendly. If you don’t want to risk tangled curls, throw on a head wrap that you don’t mind getting a little wet or do a quick updo before stepping in the water. Remember to look after your hair after taking a dip - a deep conditioning mask after a swim goes a long way.

Pro tip: Stay away from swimming caps because they can pull and break your hair.

Stay hydrated. As the weather gets warmer, your body will need more water to stay healthy. And of course, a healthy body means healthy hair. Water hydrates the scalp and promotes circulation, which leads to longer and fuller hair.

Pro tip: For more on how your eating and drinking habits affect your hair, check out this great post by our guest blogger, Delicia.

As you go outside more this season, remember to consider the potential effects of the sun. Not only does it dry out your hair, but it also lightens it over time. This is sometimes unavoidable, but minimizing the effects is easy. No one expects you to wear a hat all the time, but you can definitely use your favourite hair oil to seal and protect your hair. A great go-to is the MPL Original Hair Oil. Not only will it protect your hair from sun damage, but you’ll love how the moisture will keep it glistening in the sun’s rays.

Pro tip: With warmer weather comes more frizz, so it’s also a good time to cut down on any heat treatments.

We all know a little about winter protective styles, but now that we’re saying goodbye to our coats and hello to florals, it doesn’t mean we should get rid of these styles completely. Change of season is a great excuse for a new look! Why not channel some of your favourite stars like Sho Madjozi and have fun with cornrows or take a walk on the wild side with brightly colored braids, DJ Doowap style?

Changing seasons mean new beginnings. Enjoy this transitional time and remember to always look after your crown.
