Our hair grows differently and our curls are not the same to the next girl. Our curls are catagorized differently let’s stick to type 4 for now. Let’s unpack it all for you. “Which hair-type am I?” you may be asking yourself. A 4A, 4B or a 4C? It all boils down to your hair texture.

The 4A – The “S ” Kink

This type of curl is more defined and loose in its curls. We call it the Solange curl (*often seen on Solange Knowles), not prone to shrinkage. Wash-and-go hair routines, when done the right way, can be beneficial to this hair type. Air-drying is best for our curls and coils.

4B – The “Z” Kink

This type of curl is between a 4A and a 4C curl type, its hair strand forms a “Z” shape and it is a fluffy afro bearing much the same resemblance to cotton wool. It could shrink up to 70% when in contact with moisture.

4C – The Tight Kink

This is a tight coil with a diameter of up to 1mm. The coils have no definition, its that tightly packed coarse afro. The curls are not easy to see and the shrinkage is real, up to 80% shrinkage can occur when it comes in contact with water. But this gives some versatility to different hair styles.

Now that you know your hair type. Let that nappy hair grow free and natural. We hope you will wear your hair proud in just any hairstyle you wish to wear it in.

Love, MPL.
